What is a tracker?

Global Energy Monitor’s trackers generally use a tiered system for organizing information, consisting of both a database and wiki-style pages with further information. The database tracks individual assets and includes information such as owner and parent company, operating status, fuel type, workforce size, and location.

Most trackers also include an interactive map with location details for each asset, a dashboard, and summary tables with topline findings from the dataset.

Research process

Research processes vary by program. All GEM data is gathered from public and private data sources as detailed on each tracker’s methodology page. The data are then vetted against additional sources of information. Where possible, data are circulated for review to researchers familiar with local conditions and languages.

Wiki pages

For each asset in a GEM tracker, a wiki page is created on GEM.wiki. Wiki pages are a repository for asset details and additional in-depth information that may not be included in the downloadable dataset, such as information about the asset background, financing, environmental impacts, raw material sourcing, finished product uses, public opposition, aerial photographs, videos, and links to environmental permits. All information is linked to a published reference, such as a news article, company or government report, or a regulatory permit.
