About us

Our organization, mission, and history

Our mission

Global Energy Monitor develops and analyzes data on energy infrastructure, resources, and uses. We provide open access to information that is essential to building a sustainable energy future.

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a global, independent nonprofit  that maps and tracks energy infrastructures worldwide, from power stations and coal mines to steel plants and shipping terminals.

GEM staff are experts and thought leaders on energy topics. GEM’s verifiable, open-source data and independent analyses safeguard transparency and drive change around the world in support of a just energy transition. GEM stands as a shared source of truth on the global energy system.

GEM serves a broad coalition of stakeholders working to shape the energy transition, including governments, financial institutions, journalists, researchers, and advocates. Partners collaborate with GEM and rely on the organization to provide trusted, independent information to support decision making that is accountable, effective, and driven by facts.

Our history

From an initial emphasis on energy in the United States, GEM quickly expanded its focus to a global scale.

In 2007, an informal group of journalists and environmental advocates began documenting coal plants proposals in the United States.

In 2008, GEM (then known as CoalSwarm) became affiliated with the Earth Island Institute and operated as a project of it for ten years before incorporating as an independent nonprofit organization in 2017.

In 2014, GEM released it's first tracker cataloguing thousands of coal-fired plants in all stages of development.

By the end of the 2010s, GEM’s work was being used by academics, activists, businesses, the media, national and international agencies, and fellow research organizations.

Our portfolio

GEM maintains one of the most comprehensive and trusted energy sector databases in the world. Covering existing and planned infrastructure across all major energy sources, GEM datasets and analytical reports include information about ownership, financiers, project status, timelines, and emissions. GEM trackers are publicly available through user-friendly interactive maps, summary tables, and dashboards.

Staff experts produce reports and briefings based on analysis of GEM data, frequently with partners at other leading institutions. Flagship reports such as Boom and Bust Coal, Pedal to the Metal, and the Wind and Solar Year in Review are each cited by the media hundreds of times every year.

How we work

GEM’s programs include coal, oil and gas, heavy industry, and renewables and other power, with projects that foster organization-wide collaboration including the Global Integrated Power Tracker and the Global Energy Ownership Tracker. Researchers and strategists with specialties in each industry carefully collect and verify data, working with partners to gather and analyze the research.GEM is a leader or core member of several networks and working groups, ensuring research and communication methods evolve to meet the needs of data users. GEM staff present to external audiences, conferences, and events throughout the year around the world.
