Meet GEM staff

Gregor Clark - Project Manager in Special Projects

Why do you enjoy working at GEM?
I’m inspired every day by the brilliant, motivated, and warm-hearted folks I work with and by GEM’s mission of providing open, accessible data in support of the global energy transition.  I love the international focus of our work and the wide range of backgrounds, nationalities, and talents represented within our organization.

What do you love most about the organization’s culture?
GEM’s culture encourages both self-directedness and collegiality. People are given tremendous autonomy to do their best work in their own way, but the company also provides ample opportunities for collaboration, learning from others, and connecting socially with colleagues — despite the fact that we all work remotely.

What motivates you to stay and grow within the organization?
I read and speak several languages, and GEM provides fertile ground for using and enhancing those skills in a meaningful real-world context. I appreciate the professional development opportunities GEM offers in areas of personal interest such as dataviz and QGIS mapping, and the company's generous benefits, which promote a healthy work-life balance, allowing time to periodically recharge my batteries.

Julie Joly - Oil and Gas Program Director

Why do you enjoy working at GEM?
GEM presents the opportunity to do work that supports the climate movement while working with some of the most amazing, dedicated, interesting, and thoughtful people I've ever encountered. I'm lucky to be able to do work I am passionate about while surrounded by people who feel the same way.

What do you love most about the organization’s culture?
The organization really centers itself on the well-being of its personnel. It's refreshing to work for an organization that prioritizes its employees' emotional and physical well-being. From routine ergonomic consultations to group meditation sessions to flexible schedules, I have always felt respected and supported.

What motivates you to stay and grow within the organization?
There is a strong dedication within the organization and among its staff to support the work of the climate movement. That translates into a refusal to cut corners, a dedication to accuracy and precision in our work, and a determination to provide the most useful data to the most people possible. This mission motivates me, as does the opportunity to constantly learn and expand my understanding of the energy sector and the broader context in which we operate.

Ilyne Castellanos - Researcher in Renewables & Other Power

Why do you enjoy working at GEM?
As a researcher for the Wind and Solar Power Trackers at GEM, I dive into renewable energy development around the world, gaining insight into the unique dynamics shaping the energy landscape in the countries I focus on. Being able to use my language and research skills to turn my findings into accessible, reliable data that people around can use is empowering and one of the things I love most about working at GEM.

What do you love most about the organization’s culture?
From my first day, I’ve felt genuinely supported and valued. GEM fosters a culture that feels intentionally collaborative, thoughtful, and inclusive. The idea of transitioning to a fully remote environment was daunting; however, I have found myself welcomed and taken care of by my colleagues. It’s amazing to be part of such a talented and driven team and meaningful to know I can reach out to my colleagues with any questions or concerns or even just for a coffee chat.

What motivates you to stay and grow within the organization?
GEM feels like a place that truly invests and supports its staff. Many of my colleagues started out as researchers like me, and it is inspiring to see the different roles they have grown into within the organization. With strong mentorship from people I admire and real opportunities for growth, I’m excited to continue building my future at GEM.

Henna Khadeeja - Research Analyst in Heavy Industry

Being part of an organization that is committed to making transparent, accurate, and accessible data on global energy infrastructure empowers real change. It allows me to contribute meaningfully to a mission I deeply care about and is rewarding to know that the work we do plays a critical role in shaping policies, supporting advocacy, and driving the global transition towards a more sustainable future.

What do you love most about the organization’s culture?
What I love most about GEM’s culture is the genuine emphasis on collaboration, openness, and continuous improvement. Feedback is a two-way street. While I receive thoughtful input on my work, leadership actively invites feedback from employees to shape a better, more inclusive workplace. There’s a strong sense of camaraderie, mutual respect, and a shared purpose that makes working here both meaningful and fulfilling.

What motivates you to stay and grow within the organization?
At GEM, I feel seen, valued, and inspired. Every project I contribute to, big or small, feels like a vital part of a larger, impactful mission. The opportunities for growth, learning, and innovation are abundant, and the supportive environment motivates me to continue evolving, both professionally and personally.

Abby Henkel Roman - Impact Manager in Admin

Why do you enjoy working at GEM?
At GEM, my job challenges me every day to do my best work and harness my skills while enabling me to contribute to a mission that resonates with me. I'm constantly learning new things and encouraged by my supervisor and colleagues to try out my ideas.

What do you love most about the organization’s culture?
In my 15-year career thus far, GEM is the most people-friendly organization I've worked for. I feel surrounded by peers with deep intellect and expertise, balanced with unusual humility and a collaborative spirit. While we're all remote, which works well for me, we make time for in-person gatherings and fun ways to build connection throughout the year.

What motivates you to stay and grow within the organization?
Just as GEM is responsive to the needs of our ecosystem of data users and partners, internally our leaders foster adaptability and growth of both employees and the ways we work as an organization. I'm supported by an individual professional development plan and opportunities to develop skills and contribute to projects that challenge me. I feel like I'm right where I need to be.
