In 2025, GEM was a core information source for energy discussions worldwide. People in 196 countries download GEM data, which was used to build decision-making tools, inform national energy plans, guide investment decisions, and much more. Justin Locke stepped into the Executive Director role following the retirement of founder Ted Nace after 17 transformative years. GEM introduced two heavy industry tools: the Global Cement and Concrete Tracker and the Global Chemicals Inventory. Meanwhile, flagship industry reports informed and propelled discussions around the evolving energy landscape—ranging from coal plants and gas pipelines to utility-scale solar, hydropower, and more. Internally, thoughtful analysis helped strengthen the organization, foster leadership, and cultivate a sense of community.

2024 marked a pivotal year for Global Energy Monitor (GEM). From its beginnings as CoalSwarm to a global leader in open-energy data, GEM launched three major tools — the Global Integrated Power Tracker, the Global Energy Transition Tracker, and the Global Energy Ownership Tracker — while expanding datasets across renewables, heavy industry, and finance. The year also marked the final full year of leadership by founder and Executive Director Ted Nace, whose vision built the foundation for GEM’s mission to provide the open, high-quality information needed to power a sustainable energy future.

Accomplishing the rapid decarbonization of the world’s energy system is arguably humanity’s most ambitious and critical project ever attempted. Bringing it about requires mobilization and action at all levels, from citizen groups and academic institutions to large corporations and governments. In order for action at any level to be effective, stakeholders need a shared base of open and accurate data on the individual elements of the energy system. Beginning with the Global Coal Plant Tracker in 2014, Global Energy Monitor (GEM) has steadily built a world- class ensemble of 22 open-source datasets on energy assets. These serve as essential movement infrastructure to accelerate the worldwide clean energy transition spanning renewable energy, coal, heavy industry, and oil and gas.
