Christine Shearer

Project Manager, Global Coal Plant Tracker

Christine Shearer is project manager of the Global Coal Plant Tracker (GCPT). She recently returned to GEM from the Climate Imperative (CI) Foundation, where she served as Research Manager modeling and analyzing the greenhouse gas impacts of the foundation’s initiatives. 

Prior to CI, Christine worked as a Research Analyst and Program Director at GEM for over a decade, where she co-created the GCPT and oversaw the development of several subsequent energy trackers. Christine also worked as a postdoctoral scholar in Earth System Science at the University of California in Irvine and as a research fellow at Project Drawdown and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis. 

Her peer-reviewed research has appeared in publications such as AGU Advances and Earth’s Future, and has been featured in The New York Times and The Economist, among others. Christine holds an M.A. and PhD in Sociology from UC Santa Barbara, and is author of The Everywhere Atom: A Journey Through the Carbon Cycle and Climate Change (Haymarket Books, 2024) and Kivalina: A Climate Change Story (Haymarket Books, 2011).
