San Francisco, CA – Global Energy Monitor has launched a new tool for tracking the global transition to renewable energy, the Global Geothermal Power Tracker. The tracker includes 323 plants with a minimum capacity of 30 megawatts (MW) across 28 countries, making it the most comprehensive, open-source resource of its kind for documenting geothermal power generation globally.

The Global Geothermal Power Tracker documents 11 gigawatts (GW) of operating geothermal power capacity and 7 GW of geothermal power capacity that is announced, in development, or in construction.

The top five countries by operating geothermal power capacity are:

  1. United States (2,762 MW)
  2. Indonesia (2,074 MW)
  3. Philippines (1,590 MW)
  4. New Zealand (926 MW)
  5. Kenya (832 MW)

The top five countries by geothermal power capacity that is announced, in development, or in construction  are:

  1. Indonesia (2,055 MW)
  2. Kenya (1,710 MW)
  3. Ethiopia (470 MW)
  4. New Zealand (433 MW)
