Global Energy Monitor

Climate TRACE

Climate TRACE is an open data project that uses satellites, other remote sensing techniques, and artificial intelligence to deliver a detailed, independent look at global emissions. Emissions from the steel sector (subsector under manufacturing) were trained and cross-checked using Global Energy Monitor’s database of steel plants (see Climate TRACE’s steel methodology).

Global Steel Cost Tracker

The Global Steel Cost Tracker (GSCT) is an open data project that estimates the plant production costs of BF, BOF and electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production routes representing around 90% of global production. The cost estimates are broken down by raw materials, energy, labour, and other costs. GSCT is based on a methodology report by TransitionZero and Global Efficiency Intelligence and a database of steel plants developed by the Global Energy Monitor (GEM).

Green Steel Tracker

The Green Steel Tracker aims to support decision makers in policy and industry, academia as well as civil society, by tracking public announcements of low-carbon investments in the steel industry and presenting them transparently in one place. The Green Steel Tracker is developed jointly by Stockholm Environmental Institute (SEI), the LeadIT Secretariat, and partnerships with Global Energy Monitor, Lund University, Agora Energiewende, Comillas Pontifical University, DIW Berlin, E3G, Europe Beyond Coal, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, and the University of Stavanger.

Net Zero Steel

The Net Zero Steel project constructs several transparent net-zero scenarios for the global steel sector based on projected demand, the retrofits cycle for steel plants, availability of scrap, access to CCS disposal geology, and solar PV and excess hydroelectric power driving hydrogen based steel making. Net Zero Steel is developed as a partnership between Institut du Développement Durable et des Relations Internationales (IDDRI) and Global Energy Monitor.

RENEW-Industry

The Research Network on Industrial Decarbonisation (RENEW-Industry) is a network for scientific researchers in academia and research institutes to facilitate the exchange of ideas, opportunities, and news. RENEW-Industry releases a bi-monthly newsletter on industrial decarbonization topics including relevant articles, events, and job postings. RENEW-Industry is convened and co-edited by Caitlin Swalec (Global Energy Monitor), Timo Gerres (Comillas Pontifical University), Johan Rootzén (IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute), Holger Wiertzema (Hamburg University of Applied Sciences), and Max Åhman (Lund University).

Steel Data Network

The Steel Data Network (SDN) is a community of individuals interested in steel and industrial decarbonization. Global Energy Monitor manages the SDN, which meets bi-monthly to discuss current topics in steel decarbonization. Requests to join or present to this organization can be sent to Caitlin Swalec ([email protected]).
