GEM Internship Summer 2021


Global Energy Monitor is seeking summer interns to support GEM’s energy research programs as well as its organizational operations. Internships are paid, and offer the opportunity to work closely with GEM staff while pursing independent interests through self-designed research projects.

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policy makers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and scores of others.


GEM is offering both part-and full-time internships for the summer of 2021. Start and end dates are flexible, though we do ask for a commitment of at least eight weeks. All internships are compensated, unless interns are not eligible for compensation due to school requirements for receiving credit, etc.

Internships with GEM are performed remotely. GEM does not have a central office; employees work from home offices and need not be based in the United States.

During the summer, interns will have the opportunity to support GEM programs and internal operations. Interns will be matched with a supervisor depending on their interests and skills. Specific duties will vary from project to project, but will often involve assistance with research, data organization, website maintenance, and other miscellaneous support. Interns may work on more than one GEM project, with the prior approval of their supervisor. Interns may also support GEM’s internal functions, including operations, administration, finance, IT, communications, and more.

During the internship program, interns will also have the opportunity to design and work on their own research project with the support and guidance of their supervisor. Research projects are intended to give interns a chance to explore questions and topics that reflect their academic, personal, and/or career interests. Interns do not need to have a specific project chosen at the start of the program, and may work with their supervisor to narrow down their selection from a list of potential topics.

For full-time interns, approximately four days a week will be spent supporting GEM research programs and operations, with the remaining fifth day being spend on independent research. Part-time interns will have a schedule determine in coordination with their supervisor, with at least half a day per week set aside for independent research.

Full-time interns will work up to 40 hours per week, including breaks. Part-time interns will work up to 20 hours per week, including breaks. Both full- and part-time interns will be compensated at a rate of $20 per hour, unless they are not eligible for compensation.


  • Interns must be rising college sophomores, juniors, seniors, or recent graduates
  • Experience with research, data, and analysis preferred
  • A beginning understanding of the global energy system is preferred
  • Prior experience with energy or environmental research is preferred, but not required
  • Interns must be able to work independently in a remote setting
  • Interns must be facts-oriented, thorough, and attentive to detail
